GETTING TO

villa layla

Entry airports & overview

Most international travelers reach Costa Rica by air via one of two main gateways:

  • San José International Airport (SJO): gateway to the Central Valley

  • Liberia International Airport (LIR): northern Pacific gateway, sometimes more convenient for Nicoya Peninsula

From either airport, you can continue your journey to Santa Teresa (Nicoya Peninsula, Puntarenas) by several different routes — by car, shuttle, domestic flight, or ferry + road.

Travel routes to Santa Teresa

1. Domestic Flight + Short Road Transfer

  • From San José (SJO) or Liberia (LIR), you can take a domestic flight to Cobano Airport (near Santa Teresa / Cóbano / Tambor area).

  • From Cobano airport, it’s approximately 25–30 min by private car or shuttle to Villa Layla.

  • Ideal if you prefer fastest, most comfortable arrival after an international flight — minimal road travel, fresh start.

2. Shuttle / Private Transfer (from SJO or LIR)

  • From San José or Liberia, a private or shared shuttle / van service can bring you directly to Santa Teresa. Duration: roughly 4.5 to 6 hours depending on traffic and ferry schedules.

  • Great for groups, families, or anyone preferring hassle-free and comfortable transport (bilingual drivers, A/C, luggage space).

  • We can arrange the shuttle for you — just contact us via WhatsApp.

3. Rental Car (DIY Road Trip)

  • For freedom and flexibility. From SJO → follow Route 27 → Puntarenas → ferry crossing to Paquera → then road to Santa Teresa via Cobano / Cóbano → final stretch to the coast.

  • Best suited for travelers who enjoy exploring on their own. Recommended to use a 4×4 especially in rainy season or if you plan off-road exploration — roads to beaches and some parts of the peninsula can be remote.

  • Offers flexibility for side-trips (waterfalls, nearby beaches, nature reserves, etc.).

4. Bus + Ferry + Local Transport (Budget Option)

  • For a budget-conscious traveler: take bus from San José → Puntarenas, then ferry across Gulf of Nicoya → bus from Paquera → Cóbano → Santa Teresa.

  • This option is more time-consuming (multiple transfers) and less convenient — we only recommend if you’re on a tight budget and traveling light.

Final leg: Shuttle from Cobano to Villa Layla

Once you arrive in Cobano (by plane, ferry or road), our concierge will arrange a private transfer directly to Villa Layla, located on a hillside above Santa Teresa. It’s a short, scenic 20–30 min drive through lush jungle roads — a perfect transition from travel into tropical calm and comfort.

SEASON & WEATHER

in santa teresa

Climate overview

Santa Teresa enjoys a tropical Pacific climate, defined by two main periods: a dry season and a rainy season.

  • Dry Season: roughly December to April — sunny days, warm temperatures, minimal rain.

  • Rainy Season: usually May to November — lush vegetation, afternoon showers, vibrant jungle and countryside.

However, “rainy season” doesn’t mean constant rain. Often mornings are sunny and clear, with rain arriving in the afternoon or evening — giving you ample opportunity to enjoy the beach, surf, or hike.

December – April (Dry season / High season):
Hot, sunny, consistent waves, calm seas early in season — water warm, great surf & beach conditions.

Ideal for beach holidays, surfing, yoga retreats, outdoor dining — expect maximum sunshine & clear skies. Great for weddings, villa stays, sunset dinners.

May – June (Start of Rainy Season / “Green Season begins”):
Rain begins to pick up, but rainfall often comes later in day; vegetation turns vibrant.

Good for travelers seeking a quieter atmosphere, lush jungle views, lower prices, and a more relaxed “tropical rainforest” vibe. Surf still possible.

July – August (Green Season / Shoulder Season):
Combination of sun and rain, frequent jungle showers, hot and humid air, warm ocean, fewer tourists.

Excellent for travelers wanting serenity, nature, and lush landscapes. Great for wellness, retreats, and enjoying the pool and villas in a peaceful setting.

September – October (Rainy Season Peak):

Heaviest rainfall, strong showers, possible rough surf and ocean conditions, fewer visitors.

Quietest period: ideal for travelers seeking solitude, lower prices, dramatic jungle & ocean views, and cozy villa stays. Beach days less predictable — good for surfing (for experienced surfers), spa & wellness stays, reading, and nature watching.

November (Transition / Early Dry Season):
Rain begins to taper off, skies clear toward end of month, favorable weather returning.

Great opportunity to enjoy milder weather, green landscapes, and fewer crowds — good balance of value and comfort.

Why Santa Teresa’s seasons work for Villa Layla

At Villa Layla, we embrace all seasons — each brings a different mood and beauty:

  • Dry Season: ideal for surf, beach, social gatherings, sunsets, outdoor living.

  • Green Season: ideal for wellness, privacy, nature immersion, green landscapes, and tranquil luxury.

Our villa’s location on a hillside overlooking ocean and jungle gives you the best of both worlds — easy access to beaches and surf spots, while enjoying peace, lushness, and privacy.

We also adapt our services seasonally: private transfers, in-villa wellness or chef services, flexible check-ins, and tailored experiences depending on weather and your preferences.

Booking & travel tips by season

  • High Season (Dec–Apr): Book well in advance — villas and flights fill up quickly. Prices are higher, but weather is ideal, perfect for surf, beach, sun, and social energy.

  • Green Season (May–Oct): Enjoy lower rates, more availability, more privacy — but remember tropical showers are common. Bring flexible clothes, light rain jacket, and plan for indoor / outdoor mix.

  • Shoulder Periods (Nov, May, Jul–Aug): Great balance between reasonable rates, pleasant weather, and softer crowd levels — ideal for travelers seeking comfort + value.
